Selina Ellis 1860s Sampler Paper Chart
This is quite the departure from the usual Christian verses found on so many samplers. It is another Welsh Sampler from the 1860s. What makes it Welsh is her last name, the plethora of flower motifs and the Celtic knots (not found at all on English samplers). They were found mostly in Wales and Ireland. These were not apparent on the original because of the decay of the threads. I was so happy to see them! As with all Welsh samplers, it exudes cheerfulness and bright colors. The faded front is quite different from the bright back. The sampler is charted in the back colors.
"Whats in thy mind let no one see
Unto thy friend no secret show
For when thy friend has turnd thy foe
Then all the world thy mind will know."
