Filled from top to bottom with an extraordinary collection of motifs, Mary's sampler is a delight to explore. Pheasants stand among flowering branches, deer and cows share the landscape with birds and baskets of flowers, while swans, a sailing vessel, and wonderfully unusual creatures make their appearance throughout. A bold stylized flower anchors the center, surrounded by the beautifully ordered symmetry so characteristic of nineteenth century needlework. There is so much to see!

Despite the abundance of detail, Mary's sampler has a wonderful sense of balance. The muted greens, warm reds, soft blues, and earthy neutrals give the reproduction the aged character of an antique textile while allowing each little motif to stand on its own.

It is difficult to look at the intricacy of this sampler and not marvel that Mary completed it when she was only ten years old. This has become one of my favorite samplers in the collection, and I hope you enjoy discovering all of Mary's little stitched details as much as I have.
