Mary Elizabeth Leet's American Sampler is such a beautiful piece of needlework for such a young girl and with a bit of mystery. (I added it to the pattern) The typical format of samplers evolved in the early 18th century into something that could be displayed on the wall in the style of a painting, rather than rolled up as a long, narrow reference piece. You would see alphabets, repeating borders, house and garden motives along with personalized religious verses.

Design Area: 227Wx 323H stitches
Stitched Area: 14-1/4 inches wide by 20-1/4 inches high
Fabric Size: 20 inches wide by 26 inches high
this includes 3 inches (8cm) allowance on all sides for finishing or framing
All cross stitches, no specialty stitches. The original was stitched in the wool over canvas type material and is a rather large piece 16w x 20h. Using either 28ct (14ct Aida) or 32 ct (16ct Aida) linen brings it close to the original size. For the reproduction 32ct linen was used, and two strands of floss are used for all stitches. The original piece had a hemstitch border around the whole sampler to finish it off (optional)
