IW 1855 Dutch Sampler Cross Stitch Paper Chart

IW 1855 is a wonderfully exuberant Dutch sampler filled with flowers, crowns and striking heraldic imagery.

At its heart are two large lions holding a sword and a bundle of arrows, imagery deeply rooted in the history of the Netherlands. The lion has long appeared in Dutch heraldry, while the seven arrows represent the seven provinces of the former Republic of the United Provinces. Bound together, the arrows symbolized unity and strength, an emblem that continued into the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Surrounding the lions is an extraordinary garden of color. Large floral arrangements fill the center of the sampler, while smaller bouquets, stylized flowering plants and crowns create a beautifully balanced composition. A continuous floral border encloses the entire piece.

The original sampler has experienced considerable fading and deterioration over its long life. When reproducing IW 1855, I chose to chart the richer colors preserved on the back of the original, giving us a glimpse of how vibrant her sampler may have appeared when it was first stitched more than 170 years ago.

The sampler has a stitch count of 279 stitches wide by 327 stitches high and may be stitched on either Aida or linen.
