Frances Cole stitched this beautiful sampler in 1782.It is in remarkable condition for being almost 250 years old.
I charted the sampler for Aida or linen, if you prefer not tot stitch any over-one. There is an “insert” at the end of the chart to use if you want to stitch the over-one section on linen.
Threads listed are DMC or Soie d'alger silks
Fiber on a Whim linen “cream & Sugar is a great match to the original without the dark stains. Use one strand of silk or floss. There is no rule that says you can’t use two strands of cotton floss if you like this better. It is a personal choice.
You can choose to stitch the large alphabet in either eyelets like the original or Smyrna cross. Smyrna crosses seem to work better when using Aida.
247 stitches wide by 295 stitches high
The original sampler is 13 by 17 inches and stitched on uneven weave cloth close to 38/34 count.
14/28 count - design size is 17.75 x 21.00 cut fabric 24 by 27 inches
16/32 count - design size is 15.50 x 18.50 cut fabric 21 by 24 inches
18/36 count - design size is 13.75 x 16.50 cut fabric 20 by 22 inches
20/40 count - design size is 12.25 x 14.75 cut fabric 18 by 21 inches
