A delicate and beautiful redwork marking sampler from 1808! This is one of the earliest red marking samplers. I know Bristol samplers did not appear until the 1860s. The pattern of Mary Purdye in my store is from 1815.
Lydia was a very accomplished stitcher and the back is almost as perfect as the front.
There is an upper and lower case alphabet with the "J" omitted. The lower case alphabet uses the old English long "s" in the shape of an "f". There are numbers up to 28 followed by a long verse.
A rare collector's item for collectors of antique textile art,
Size: approx. 12 × 10.75 inches
Stitched cotton on linen
Origin: England, found in Chichester, West Sussex
(not charted)
Condition:
The cloth is well preserved for its age of 217 years. It has some small holes and staining. These do not detract from the overall aesthetic, but rather underline the authenticity and historical character of the piece.
