A Rare Victorian Sampler with a Remarkable Story

Stitched in 1875 by Clara Helen Woodward, this extraordinary antique sampler is a true one-of-a-kind heirloom — a window into the life of a gifted Victorian woman whose story spans Norfolk rectories, London boarding schools, the Uganda Railway, and ultimately, Nairobi.

The Maker: Clara Helen Woodward Berrill (1864–1949)

Clara was born on 16 April 1864 at Saham Toney, Norfolk, the eldest child of the Reverend William Woodward and his wife Elizabeth Mary Ann Lee. By age six she was already a boarder at a school in Buckinghamshire, and by her teens a scholar at a private school in Streatham, London — where she honed the artistic sensibility that would define her.

Her talent was recognized publicly: as Miss C. H. Woodward, she exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Society from Kessingland Rectory in 1882 and 1883, showing watercolors of fruit and flowers. This sampler, stitched around that same formative period, reflects that same careful eye for beauty and detail.

In 1889 she married Charles Gale Berrill. Around 1900–1901, her husband took up a post as Overseer of No. 1 Maintenance Division on the Uganda Railway, based at Makindu in British East Africa — one of the great engineering feats of the Victorian era. He resigned in April 1901. The family later returned to England, where Charles died in 1916.

Clara lived out her later years in Kent and Worcestershire, but her connection to East Africa endured. She died on 21 February 1949 in Nairobi, Kenya — far from the Norfolk village where she was born, and where, as a young girl, she first picked up a needle and thread. Probate was granted by the Gazette on 16 August 1949.

The Sampler

  • Charming motifs including a central teapot and tea cups, a blue pagoda, and full alphabet rows in classic Victorian style
  • Miniature scale, measures approximately 12" × 7.5"
  • Exceptional condition, hemstitched edges, strong color front and back, no holes or damage
  • Signed and dated, authenticated to Clara Helen Woodward, 1875

Details

  • Dimensions: 12" × 7.5"
  • Technique: Cross stitch with hemstitch border
  • Era: Victorian, 1875
  • Origin: England (Norfolk/Suffolk)

A museum-quality piece for the serious collector of antique needlework, textile art, Victorian social history, or British colonial Africa.
