A Charming Victorian Sampler from the Heart of Westmorland

Stitched in 1852 by Mary Gasgarth of Sleagill, Westmorland, this small and utterly charming antique sampler carries the warmth and character of rural Victorian England. At just 12" × 12", it is the perfect size to display — easy to find a spot on the wall, and impossible to overlook once you do.

The Maker: Mary Gasgarth (b. 1839)

Mary was born in September 1839 in Sleagill, a quiet farming village in the historic county of Westmorland (now part of Cumbria), North West England. She was the daughter of Daniel Grave Gasgarth (1804–1881) of Reagill and Frances Swainson, and one of seven children raised in the close-knit parish communities of this limestone countryside.

In 1852, at around thirteen years old, Mary sat down with wool, silk, and linen and stitched this sampler signing her name in silk thread, a detail that speaks to both pride and care.

The Sampler

  • Wool on linen with her name stitched in silk, a lovely and personal touch
  • Lined on the back with fabric, well-constructed and thoughtfully finished
  • Satin stitch and four-sided stitch, Mary experimented with multiple techniques, showing ambition beyond a basic sampler
  • Charming colors that retain their warmth and character after 170+ years
  • Some minor loss of wool stitching consistent with age, honest wear that adds to its authenticity
